Is it the end of the month already? Does time move faster once you hit age 30? Anything is possible:)

First off, I’m psyched that  Re over at Bad Gals Radio reviewed my site and liked it so much she did an interview too, gotta love that. Here is what Re had to say about me:
“Originating in the Caribbean and growing up in New York; Denises’ sensibilities are current to the mood of today. she’s down to earth, thoughtful, forthright, Funny and an all around enjoyable read. I put her in the Gratitude Column, when I size up blogs. when you got it, you can share it. Denise Does in Each Blog.

4 Tips to Help You Keep The Faith While You’re Losing Everything Else is One of Our Favorites. We’ve sent this article to friends who’ve cried about foreclosures and layoffs; and they always say the same thing we did when we read it – Great Advice, in faith and functionality. no hellfire and brimstone, just a straight shooter calling out the options, clearly – so you can make the right choices in a time of stress.”

Bad Gals Radio is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get until the page opens. Today’s topic is quite sad, go take a look. And look for me to do an interview with the blogger who never sleeps sometime in the near future.

The next site I am loving right now is Rantings of a Mad Rodent he is a straight shooting son of a gun with a dirty mouth, chances are that in the middle of laughing at what he’s saying, you might realize that he’s probably right.

I also want to give props to my buddy Scott over at  Real Estate Investing Blog who is just such a go getter. Check out his social marketing package in the Entrecard market.

Looking for a Hand Up not a Handout? Try a Work at Home Job

Not everyone wants to do internet marketing ,MLM, or affiliate marketing. I once had a prospect tell me  “Look, I need a pay check, I want something where I work, and somebody gives me check at the end of the week “. Well have no fear, I am here to help you, not scam or hurt you:)

Here are some of the jobs that you can do from the comfort of your kitchen table:

Virtual assistant is basically a  secretarial or administrative/executive assistant type of  gig. You may be asked to do anything from answer a forwarded phone to creating a financial spreadsheet or powerpoint presentation.

Article or eBook writer – network and internet marketers  often need someone to ghost write their articles and ebooks. You’re usually given guidelines to wrk from.

Web Developer/programmer – people want websites, blogs set up, some change to their site that they do not know how to do etc.

Customer Service – you know when you are watching those infomercials and they say call within the next 15 minutes and…? well you could be one of the reps that gets called. These jobs usually require a quiet place to work and a landline (no VOIP or Cell phones).

Places to look for work (some companies may charge a small fee for a drug test or background check, but they are legitimate):

Bid for VA, writing, and technical gigs at:

For a customer service type job :

Please feel free to leave a comment if you kow of other work at home companies or email the info to me at dporter966@ameriplan.net.

Thanks, and good luck!

Have Peace | Cause it’s the Same Old Song

UH-1D helicopters airlift members of the 2nd B...

My friend Chiedza is a very talented (like Prince is talented) singer/songwriter/musician. His music rocks, but his live show with backup band rocks even harder. Back when everyone else was saying “Peace” or “Peace Out”  to end a conversation, Chiedza used to say instead  “Have Peace”.  It just seemed more heartfelt and sincere to me.

What’s stealing your peace these days? There are the obvious things I am sure: unemployment,  debt, the economy. I hear tell that America is going down (heard it at my own kitchen table, so I guess it must be true); some folks think it’s the end of the world and we are heading into Armageddon or the Rapture or whatever they think happens at the end.

Slow down people. You know when I first came to America there was a lot of talk about the end of the world then too.  Lemme give you the problems and the playlist from my youth:

  1. The country was in the middle of a war overseas that no one wanted (“Bring The Boys Home” by Freda Payne,”War”  by Edwin Starr, the saddest of all “The Green Green Grass of Home” by Porter Wagoner(?))
  2. Air pollution and species extinction had people worried about “the ecology” (“Mercy, Mercy me (The Ecology)” by Marvin Gaye). In 1970 my teacher told me that we would be wearing gas masks by the time I grew up, I believed her.
  3. Soldiers were coming back from Ira.. I mean Vietnam strung out on dope , and a lot of the peeps here at home weren’t feeling so good themselves (we lost Janis, Jimi and a host of others – I’m feeling Don Mclean’s “American Pie” here)
  4. We were living in New York and the economy wasn’t doing too well, I remember those days as “dark days” in the city that never sleeps
  5. Women were burning their bras and speaking out for the right to work outside the home, equal pay etc (“I Am Woman” by Helen Reddy)
  6. Negros/Blacks (we weren’t quite sure yet ) had made significant gains during the sixties but there was still a lot of ground to cover (“What’s Going On” b y Marvin Gaye)

And I told you all that to say: “Why is every generation conceited enough to believe that the world is going to end on their watch? “

This country has survived a revolution, a civil war,  world wars,  minor skirmishes overseas, minor skirmishes right here at home, our treatment of Native Americans, slavery, the Great Depression, Prohibition,  Brown vs the Board of  Education, Selma, November 22 1963,  April 4th 1968, June 5th 1968, the Watts riots, the Detroit riots, the  Chicago 7, the Manson Family, Watergate, Oklahoma City, 2001… I could, heck I probably should go on  because I  can’t believe the absolute lack of faith that I am seeing all around me.

Let me ask you again, what’s stealing your peace? Is it indecision about what to do next,  fear of what the future holds,  doubts about your ability to safely navigate these treacherous times?

My advice to you

  • Listen to the still small voice and  not the voices on the radio, TV, or across the kitchen table.
  • Stay away from negative people, negative conversation, and negative thoughts.
  • If you have to stop watching the news for a while, do it, you’ll be shocked at how this improves your outlook.
  • Most importantly have faith – after all God didn’t bring you this far to leave you where you are

Remember that your thoughts and words work together to create your reality ; so get your mind right and … Have Peace.

On Faith |You Are Whatever You Think You Are

Sexually Abused child.
Image via Wikipedia

*Inspired by James Allen’s “As A Man Thinketh”

I was moved to post this by a conversation that I had with Re over at badgalsradio about the Rihanna/ Chris Brown situation, and why women stay with men who abuse them.

The phrase “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he,” not only embraces the whole of a man’s being, but is so comprehensive as to reach out to every condition and circumstance of his life. A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all of his thoughts.

For example when I was a child of 9 or so years, I was told (in an angry and tearful way) that I was just like my father – I did not know what this meant (that I had curly hair? fairer skin than my siblings? A deep love and respect for the written word?), but I knew that it was not a good thing to be “just like” the good looking ladies man known as “Pops” (Daddy was an OG for real).

I grew up with this negative self-image (please be careful what you say to children, as they will continue to live up to your words long after you have forgotten that you said them).

I over ate throughout my childhood (probably so that I would not be anywhere near good looking because obviously that was a bad thing). You see I had been given a negative self-image and I kept this image for years (I live off of the residuals still), so because I thought of myself as a “bad” person I was sometimes a very bad person.

In some cultures, children are told (beginning in the womb) how smart, pretty, handsome and talented they are and the great heights they will scale in adulthood. These children grow into successful adults because they already think that they are beautiful, successful and prosperous human beings.

“A noble and Godlike character is not a thing of favour or chance, but is the natural result of continued effort in right thinking. An ignoble and bestial character, by the same process, is the result of the continued harbouring of groveling thoughts.”

We see this in victims of child abuse; whether said abuse is verbal, physical or sexual. These children:

  • are often very sexually active
  • prone to abuse alcohol and drugs
  • May end up being abusers themselves.

Why is this? The very act of, and the circumstances which arise out of abuse removes the ability to cultivate a good self image – how can one grow a rose among the weeds?

So, the abused person is abused a second time by their own inability to think good thoughts about themselves and therefore “by the abuse and wrong application of thought” they descend “below the level of the beast” in some aspects of their lives.

It is a testament to the power of our minds and thought itself that we are able to rise above and erase the set of negative thought images planted in our youth and forge a new set of success thoughts for ourselves. As the plant springs from, and could not be without, the seed, so do all of our actions and experiences spring from the hidden seeds of thought, and could not have appeared without them.

4 Tips to Help You Keep The Faith While You’re Losing Everything Else

v2.323 and 17/366: January 17th (Gotta Have Fa...
Image by Phoney Nickle via Flickr

What I am about to tell you is not BS.  I have lived and learned. I have had to shed possessions and money  in the same way that the economy is now shedding jobs.  I have argued with the repo man,  (he won, I lost), avoided creditor phone calls (they found other ways to reach me), had the gas, electricity and cable shut off all at the same time. I stood in line at the food bank and they rejected me for Food Stamps. And through it all,  my Faith increased. I came to know that I had lived a life of excess and needed to learn some things before I could live the life I truly deserved to live.  There is a lot to say on this topic, and today , I  will focus on 4 things you need to keep in mind. In the future,  I will cover some tools that you can use to strengthen your belief system and keep the faith, even though you may be losing everything.

Figure out not WHO God is, or WHAT God is, but WHERE God is.

When I was a child growing up in Brooklyn and attending the Church of the Evangel on Hawthorne & Bedford, I asked our pastor,  Reverend Bill Nye , where God was. Reverend Nye was one of those cool pseudo-hippie pastors with a singing voice that brought many a parishioner to tears on more than one occasion; I tell you this to say that he was a preacher you could touch, he had a huge station wagon that he used to take us kids to the park, to his Dad’s parish in Greenwich, CT, to his parents beach house in Maine – anyway darned good guy, totally available to every child and adult in his parish, and probably the main reason I have not found a church home since High School. Well, back in the ’70s,  Reverend Nye told me that God is inside of me,  that I didn’t have to  find God, because God was always with me.  I did not totally understand it back then.

“There is no place where we begin and God leaves off. We can find God only within ourselves.”

In Living the Science of Mind,  author Ernest Holmes explains it further by saying that God breathes life into you leaving an imprint – kind of like your Mom’s eyebrows and your Dad’s nose. So keeping the faith requires recognition of the fact that you are one with a spirit designed for creation and not destruction. Call it God, call it the Universe, call it Infinite Intelligence, call it what you will, just recognize the connection to it that already exists within you.

“Go thy way and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee”,

or as Henry Ford paraphrased, “if you think you can or you think you can’t you’re probably right”. Infinite Intelligence wants only the best for you. God is all about good and creation, as opposed to destruction, and health and wealth, as opposed to sickness and lack. But here’s the thing though, because you have the power to create through your thoughts, you can actually create a nightmare life for yourself as well. I’ll give you an example, in the months before I was let go from one of my jobs, I sat around thinking all the time, “What am I going to do when they let me go?”,  so of course they let me go! My fear created that situation, and I pretty much focused on the fear of losing my job so much, that it couldn’t help but happen. That’s the enormity of the  power that you have to change your circumstances, but this power acts based on your thoughts and it doesn’t know which are bad and which are good, so it just acts on what you are focused on.  Therefore; you need to decide what you really want and think about that! Your fear short circuits your good, and when you  get out of your own way, you flip the switch that allows good to flow and complete it’s circuit.

To have and keep faith you must retain the imagination and belief of a child

I have a 6 year old grandson, and the first question he asks when he sees us bringing grocery or shopping bags into the house is, “Grandpa, what did you get me?”.  He asks this knowing that Grandpa has placed a treat or a toy in one of those bags for him, probably something he mentioned in passing within the week just past. I cannot begin to tell you the changes that have manifested in my life, (and that can be manifested in yours), through that same simple belief in my own ability to create the life I want simply by believing that if I ask, it shall eventually be given to me.

To wrap it all up, the 4 things you must know are :

  1. You are one with the Spirit and the Power which created all.
  2. To access and use this power of creation you simply have to recognize it in yourself
  3. Fear  or a weak belief system is the opposite of faith and is what sends you in the wrong direction, creating lack instead of wealth and sickness instead of health
  4. To have and keep faith you must retain the imagination and belief of a child. To access the creative power ask for what you want/need believing that you will receive it.
