6 Ways to Use “The Golden Rule” When Networking & Prospecting

{{w|Kindergarten}} on the Ministry of Agricult...
Image via Wikipedia

I remember kindergarten like it was yesterday, don’t you? I was petrified, didn’t know why my father had abandoned me by leaving me with a bunch of strangers.Eventually I made a lot of friends, learned to love my teacher (she was my aunt, it was a small town in a small country), figured out that I had to either stay away from the bullies or befriend them. And like 5 year old children in kindergarten classes around the world, I learned The Golden Rule: Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You. We even sang a song about it just to really get it into our heads-:)

That first day of kindergarten feeling of absolute fear is one that we all experience from time to time in; whether it’s at a networking event of some sort, a business meeting, or just picking up the phone to call on prospective network marketing associates.  Why are you fearful when placed in a situation where you must present your business opportunity, product or service to a stranger? Think about it, do you think that your business opportunity is a scam? Do you believe that your products and services are overpriced or don’t work as advertised? Of course you don’t, so quit wearing disbelief  like a cheap suit and those fears will dissipate.

How can you utilize the Golden Rule in your business and life? I love the movie “Beaches” , I especially love this line from Bette Midler because it really describes a specific networking style

“Well enough about me, lets talk about you, what do you think about me?”

  1. Never, ever , ever begin or end a conversation by talking about yourself, your opportunity, or your product. Your conversation should be about the person that you are speaking with. You want your prospect to walk away from your conversation with the feeling that YOU really care about HIM. So FOCUS on HIM, do not interject yourself into any part of the conversation.
  2. Ask questions that  require  more than a Yes/No answer. For example: How did you get started in your business? What do you enjoy most about being a stay at home Mom? Wow That’s a great suit, where did you get it?
  3. Try to go at least 3 deep on each question (but only if the conversation lags, don’t cut them off to ask the next question). So for the firs questions above your three deep may look like this:
    • How did you get started in your business?
    • What do you enjoy most about what you do?
    • What’s your least favorite part of what you do?
    • What advice would you give to someone just getting started in your business? (note that these questions also work as followups to to the stay at home Mom question: what advice would you give to someone who wants to quit working and stay at home with her children?)
  4. If your prospect gives short answers , then ask questions that take a part of their answer and extend the conversation. Prospect:  “I love being here when my kids get home from school” You:”When your kids get home from school?” Prospect: “Yeah, they used to come home to an empty house, and now I’m here to help with homework, run them around to soccer, and ballet classes” You: “Soccer and ballet classes? “
  5. Ask not what your prospect can do for you, instead ask what you can do for your prospect. As network marketers we tend to want to cut right to the chase, put our opportunity on the table and if they don’t enroll we say “NEXT”.  But remember your prospective associate? Sure you may have something they need, but maybe right now they cannot  A) see it or   B)afford it. That does’t mean that they won’t see it, afford it and get into it with you in the future, but in the meantime you need to find out what you can do for them by asking the question “What can I do for you?” or “How can I identify a good prospect for your business?”
  6. That last one kind of threw you for a loop didn’t it? You’re thinking “What?!? Why would I want to find prospects for someone else?” OK, let’s revisit the olden Golden Rule and the Law of Reciprocity – it is a universal law that we get back what we give out. Give of yourself  with no expectation of a return on your investment , and simply because you enjoy helping people to be happy and successful, and the universe will bless you – this I can attest to.

Who can I help today?

Online Weight Loss Programs : Get the Help You Need Today

10501881

ediets.com has a weight loss plan for every lifestyle

First I will update you on my weight loss progress so far – 5lbs gone in week one, pretty cool huh?

Online weight loss programs are a pretty good deal actually. I have tried eDiets and I still like and would recommend them to my friends and readers. I think they are probably one of the best programs.

What I liked about this program is that you aren’t stuck with one diet, you can play around until you find a diet that you can live with – whether its the food, your budget, or you want to switch to get off a plateau.

The workout plans were good too. I was working fulltime back then and I would get up an hour early to get my workout in at home, once I joined a gym, I just printed the workouts and took them with me.  You can customize the workout to your fitness level and change them out once they get boring. You also get really good information from their personal trainer.

There are two other pluses to this program -

  • a very active community where you can plug in to ongoing challenges (a great way to push yourself) and talk to and make friends with others who share your dreams ,goals, and problems.
  • the ability to “talk” to the experts about your mental or physical challenges. The eDiets.com program has a mindset component that is designed to help you figure out your negative behaviors and gives solutions for what you can do to change them.

Overall eDiets.com is a premiere online diet, fitness, and healthy living destination, offering customized diet and fitness plans with innovative support tools. The program has been ranked #1 by Epicurious.com, Forbes magazine, and PC Magazine and  is the internet’s premiere healthy living destination. As I mentioned earlier there are over 2 diet, fitnes and healthy living plans that address special needs (they even have plans for diabetics and pople with high blood pressure), eDiets.com has something for everyone – including you, so what are you waiting for?
Oh, and now you can simplify even further by having your meals delivered (just like the celebrities on Celebrity Fit Club!)

Affiliate Marketing | What is Affiliate Marketing?

banner11

Affiliate marketing is the practice of paying other people (affiliates) to market your business and/or products.

Affiliates are paid to get visitors to your website or sales of said products.  It’s up to the affiliate to build a marketing and advertising campaign around the product.

There are also affiliate programs where you can create a downline and are paid a bonus for your downline activity. Affiliate marketing is attractive because:

  1. there is NO COST to get started
  2. the company provides banners, text ads and other market materials
  3. you don’t have to buy, store, or ship a product
  4. the company provides customer service so your obligation ends when the buyer clicks your link

There are many ways to become an affiliate.  Amazon.com and Walmart.com both offer programs. To locate lots of different companies that need affiliates for a product launch or a seasonal promotion, go to comission junction (cj.com). The last option is a company that pays for bringing in affiliates and marketing their products, SFI marketing group is a good example of this.

Once you have selected a product you can advertise it on a blog, a website that you build for that specific product, and also articles that you write  about the product in which you will provide a link back to your website or blog.  On your blog or website you want to place product reviews and testimonials as well as offer any accessories that go with the product. If you have money and understand pay per click advertising , I recommend using PPC to market your product also.

To be successful at affiliate marketing you need to understand keywords and Search Engine Optimization. Mark Ress, an internet marketer, is giving great FREE training over at ressonomics.com all year long.

Barack Obama’s Inauguration Speech

Inaugural Address

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Washington, D.C.
**EMBARGOED UNTIL DELIVERY**

My fellow citizens:

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land – a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America – they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted – for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things – some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.

For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.

For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions – that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act – not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do.

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions – who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them – that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works – whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public’s dollars will be held to account – to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day – because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control – and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart – not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience’s sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort – even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus – and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West – know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment – a moment that will define a generation – it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter’s courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent’s willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends – hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism – these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility – a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

This is the price and the promise of citizenship.

This is the source of our confidence – the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed – why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America’s birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

“Let it be told to the future world…that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive…that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it].”

America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

How to Lose Weight Fast: Lose Weight Fast With Me (free, easy and fun!)

118/365 - hearts and barbells.

Are you trying to figure out how to lose weight fast?

Perhaps you want to look good naked for your honeymoon, or get back into your skinny jeans, or just be flirty fine at forty!  The holidays ruined the diet that I was on, and frankly I am not a long haul kind of girl. So I got to thinking about the diets that I have been on that actually helped me to lose weight fast. They had a few things in common:

  1. They were 2 weeks or less in lenght
  2. The food was inexpensive and stuff I was buying for the family anyway
  3. They were flexible
  4. You can see  results quickly

We all know that if you lose weight fast you may gain it back twice as fast, so you have to have a long range goal/plan if you want to take the weight off and keep it off. Additionally, it helps to have a buddy or two that you can diet with.  Well I don’t know your reason for wanting to lose weight fast (and I hope you will tell me), but I just got a consulting gig which means that after

being a stay at home Mom for 2 years and working in sweats and pajamas, I now have to wear clothes that haven’t touched my body since 2006 and guess what?

that’s right I look like Frosty the Snowman in everything that I have tried on. So

My First Goal

is to lose five to seven pounds in the next fourteen days.

The Plan

We (you and I) will follow only diets that are two weeks in length or less. First up is The Scarsdale Diet. In the past I have  lost as much as  30 pounds on this diet and kept it off for over two years, so I know that it works and is easy to do. This diet has a 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off plan, on our first two weeks off we will follow the Induction  Phase of the Atkins Diet ( another one that I was able to lose weight fast on).  Then we will go back on The Scarsdale Diet for 2 weeks, by which time some of you may have lost all the weight that you needed to lose and are ready for a good maintenance program. Since I have a lot to lose I will continue with Fat Smash ( or the 4 Day Diet, I haven’t read the book yet), may try the first 2 weeks of The South Beach Diet,  etc.

You may ask – since the Scarsdale Diet is so great and has a Keep Trim program for the two weeks off, why don’t we use that? Well frankly, even though the Keep Trim program does have rules, the freedom can lead to a bit of  weight gain, and I want us to experience continuous weight loss. So there is a method to my madness.

Update – I decided to stay on Scarsdale until I lose all of my weight, since it’s easy, healthy, and cost effective. Plus it works.

Getting Fit

It’s OK to lose weight fast, as long as you add an exercise component that also gets you toned and keeps you fit. All of our exercise information will be posted on the Lose Weight/ Stay Fit page. There’s exercise advice for people who don’t have time, folks who are traveling, and those who can’t do anything too strenuous. The important thing is not to slow your metabolism as you cut calories to  lose weight fast.

Let’s Get Started!

While there are daily menus to follow, I will simplify by telling you that the key to losing weight fast on the  Scarsdale Diet is to keep it simple – eat the basic breakfast, have the fruit salad luncheach day, and for dinner have meat(all visible fat trimmed,  no skin on your chicken) or fish with a vegetable or salad.  You can snack on carrots, baby carrots and celery as much as you want – since it is winter I suggest a soup with some low sodium broth, carrots and/or celery, and some salt-free seasoning, black pepper and any other seasonings that you like. You can drink the soup between meals when you feel hungry, or at night while watching TV or surfing the internet.

Also, you may find yourself experiencing some fatigue or tiredness on the diet, this can be fixed with a multivitamin. I take one that is in liquid form – because my husband is a wuss and can’t swallow big pills.

BREAKFAST EVERY DAY:
One half grapefruit -if not available, use fruits* in season
One slice of protein bread**, toasted, no spread added ( I will be drizzling a little olive oil on mine)
Coffee /tea (no sugar, cream or milk, no honey)

SCARSDALE MEDICAL DIET- SUBSTITUTE LUNCH
One half cup low-fat pot cheese or cottage cheese, mixed with One tablespoon of low-fat sour cream. Sliced fruit, all you want (eat until you are satisfied)
6 halves of walnuts or pecans or almonds or sunflower seeds, whole or chopped, and mixed with the above or sprinkled over the fruit
Coffee/tea/no-sugar diet soda of any flavor
(Tip: puree the cottage cheese & sour cream to make a whipped topping, serve over mixed fruit & top w/ chopped nuts for a “sundae”)

Shopping List, remember to eat only what you like ( I hate canned tuna, so I won’t be eating any, not that crazy about Brussel Sprouts so I may have broccoli or some other green veggie), and to stick as closely as you can to things that your family can eat also, this way you don’t go over your grocery shopping budget.

Your Shopping List

Protein Bread – Whole grain wheat, low carb.
Grapefruits  6
Assorted Fruits – whatever fruits you like, this is for your fruit salad
Lemons / Limes
Celery and Carrots or Baby Carrots (you can eat as much of these as you want each day)
Cucumbers ,Tomatoes,Lettuce (green leaf, romaine, red leaf) – basic salad fixings
Mushrooms ,Brussels sprouts ,Zucchini ,Green peppers, String beans, Spinach,

Eggs
Low-fat cottage cheese
Low-fat sour cream
Assorted cheese slices ( I love sharp cheddar, provolone, swiss, get low fat choices)
walnuts or pecans or almonds or unsalted sunflower seeds
olives and a bottle of olive oil ( it’s been proven to be heart healthy ,gets rid of belly  fat, and helps you to lose weight fast)
Vegetable Broth & Low Sodium Chicken Stock (these can be homemade by saving your cooking liquids; add carrots & celery for a hot soup snack)
vinegar (balsamic, apple cider, rice wine, red wine, etc)
mustard (dijon, etc)
salt & pepper
ketchup
barbeque sauce
oil-free cooking spray (olive oil pam)
artificial sweetener (splenda, equal, sweet & low, stevia)

  • Salt, Non-stick vegetable spray, cocktail sauce, ketchup, chili sauce & mustard are all permitted, but should be used within MODERATION.
  • Vegetables not permitted are corn, peas, potatoes, lentils and any beans, except green or waxed.
  • Where no portion is indicated, you can eat as much as you like.
Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed.
  • Between meals you can snack on carrots, celery, and low sodium vegetable broth
  • Count your calories – they should be between 850 – 1000 a day.
  • Keep a chart and weigh yourself every day for the fourteen days – come back and share your weight loss success or vent if nothing is happenin. I’m sure we can find a tweak for you.

Here is the Basic Diet – it’s a rinse and repeat plan, meaning day 1-7 gets repeated for day 8-14; there are several variations on the diet in the book (The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet: Plus Dr. Tarnower’s Lifetime Keep-Slim Program) which is quite cheap and once you see how quickly you can take the weight off and keep it off, you will definitely want your own copy. Bush Farewell Speech: Hell Freezes Over

Hell Freezes Over By Denise Lee Porter 1/15/2009

Barack Obama's inauguration day might be coldest in history

It’s OK to start a fight based on a lie
And send our children off to war to die
It’s OK to kill abortion doctors to protect the unborn
Is it only me that sees that as an oxymoron?

History will remember the Bush years and how he spent them
While the banks clamor for more of the money we lent them
Our jobs disappear and we find it hard to cope
What to do but cling to Barack’s message of hope?

A Black President will happen on a cold day in hell
At least that’s the story we all used to tell
Across the country we watch as the temperatures fall
Ha, I guess Hell did freeze over after all

Having Good Posture Will Greatly Improve Your Network Marketing Prospecting

Image by <a href=So what’s this posture thing that network marketing trainers and gurus all talk about? Is it the way you stand? The way you sit? Does it mean that you should smile more and  talk less, or should you talk more and smile less? Do you need posture in all forms of sales prospecting,  or do you only need it when prospecting face to face?

While ” posture” can be defined as the way that you present yourself to a prospect or customer, it actually goes deeper than that. You see your posture is defined by the strength of your belief in yourself , your opportunity, and your product or service.  The stronger your belief, the greater your posture and the more likely you are to close the deal – whether that is adding a new business partner to your down line  or creating a long term relationship with a customer.  And yes, bad posture is evident even over the phone, so you need it even when people can’t see you.

I’ll make this quick, what does a weak belief system look like, feel like, smell like, taste like?  Your belief system is weak and your posture is possibly nonexistent if

you secretly believe that everyone in network marketing who is making money knows something that you don’t

you subscribe to every network marketing trainer/guru product that comes with the tagline “explode your business!” While, you should strive to learn more about network marketing, your own upline will tell you not to spend a fortune until you’ve made one.

you are afraid to pick up the phone to make initial or follow up calls

you’re depressed or disturbed by rude people and people who hang up on you

GET OVER YOURSELF! Any successful network marketer will tell you that the secret is… that there is no secret! You work hard, you utilize the system provided to you, you tweak your ads, your website, your videos, your blog, your presentation as often as necessary, you persist and eventually you break through to success.

You have to know that what you are offering will improve/enhance/change the life of the person to whom you are speaking. You also have to know that 8 out of 10 people are not ready for and do not want a change. You have to accept that that’s OK and when they are ready you will probably be the first to know. If you understand that you will suck rocks before you become the superstar that you are destined to be, then you’ll be alright.

Why Didn't You Call Me?

Here’s the serenity prayer just in case:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Your Reality Bites – How to Deal With Bill Collectors & Other Blood Suckers

dino debt collector

Did you read my previous post  “Your Boss is Not Your Daddy” ? Read it again, I’ll wait. Well can I call it or what? You’ve been laid off and have no fall back position. To top things off, now that you are a payment or two behind on the car or the mortgage or a credit card – your phone rings constantly and it’s not recruiters with lucrative job offers. What can you do besides cower in a closet or turn the ringer off (i mean if you turn the ringer off you may just miss that lone recruiter with the lucrative job offer).

So what’s this all about? Well, I’ve been there more than once, I have walked through the fire for you and I am here to tell you that you have to face your fears or the calls will never stop. Now I’m not going to give you financial advice, there are smarter people than me for that; but I am going to give you some tips that I hope will help you to get out of that funky space that hiding from debt-collection calls puts you in.

  1. Answer the phone! If you don’t answer the phone they will continue to call and believe me you don’t want to prolong this experience. Florence Scovel Shinn says when we are prepared to face the lion in our path, he magically disappears.
  2. Be nice! Like your Mom probably told you countless times – you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. You attract what you are and if you answer the phone with a growl, the lion will roar. Remember that the person on the other end
    • is just like you
    • might even be deeper in debt than you
    • is probably reading from a script and will be critiqued at the end of the call by someone listening to that recording that is being done for quality assurance purposes
  3. Explain your situation calmly and let them know that you want to pay your bill as much as they want you to pay your bill. Often this will lead to them offering you a deal of some sort like eliminating the interest and late charges and letting you pay 50% or less of what you owe. Deals like that are nice if you have the wherewithal to pay, but even if you don’t there may be a hardship program that you qualify for.
  4. If they are nasty and ask personal questions or try to make you angry – hang up. Why make yourself sick and cloud your Karma by arguing with them? Just say nicely “Thanks for the call, I’m going to hang up now, have a great day OK?”
  5. Learn your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act; one of your rights  is that you can send a letter to the collection agency and the original debtor that says “for petes sake please stop calling me!” Here’s and example (remember to send it certified mail and get a receipt):
Tired of all these bills bills bills

Dear Mr Bill Collector Sir,

I am exercising a right granted to me by the Fair Debt Collection Act. I am currently unemployed and cannot  pay the $240.00 per month required to keep this account current . I can pay $20 per month, but given my present circumstances that’s all I can afford .  I have no other property to use to pay this debt, and I cannot borrow anymore than i already have from family and friends.
Please cease all communication with me.
Sincerely,

Broke in Boise

Use this letter as an example only and make sure that you look into what your other rights under the THE FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT are.  Do you have some tips for dealing with bill collectors? Please share!
